HideMyAss (HMA) VPN Review

HideMyAss (HMA) is a secure and user-friendly VPN service with an extensive server network spanning 195 countries. It features intuitive applications, a seven-day free trial, and commendable speed performance, making it a viable choice for casual users. However, it falls short in several areas: it struggles to unblock most major streaming platforms, including Netflix, and lacks the advanced features, device compatibility, and robust customer support typically offered by leading VPN providers.

Privacy & Logging Policy

Enhanced Logging Policy Verified by Independent Audit

Privacy & Logging Policy Rating: 8.0/10

HideMyAss (HMA) has made significant strides in its logging policy, addressing past criticisms related to data retention. Since 2019, HMA has adopted a strict no-logs policy, ensuring that no activity or connection data that could identify users is collected. This policy has been independently audited and verified, confirming its adherence to privacy standards.

Ranked #21 out of 62 VPNs for Privacy & Logging Policy

Overview of Data Logged by HMA:

Date of Last Connection No
Device Information No

Individual Bandwidth Usage Yes
Individual Connection Timestamps Yes
ISP No
Number of Simultaneous Connections No

VPN Server Location No

HideMyAss (HMA) updated its logging policy to a ‘no-logs’ framework in September 2019, ensuring that it does not retain any identifiable data that could potentially de-anonymize user activity.

hidemyass-no-logs-privacy-policy

This policy was independently audited and verified by the reputable cybersecurity consulting firm VerSprite in August 2020. VerSprite awarded HideMyAss a “low-risk user privacy impact rating”—the highest possible classification. Independent security audits offer tangible proof of a VPN’s practices, providing assurance beyond the VPN’s own claims.

HMA retains only minimal personal information, such as your email address and username, which is standard practice among VPN providers.

For enhanced privacy, it would be beneficial for HMA to introduce untraceable payment options, such as cash or cryptocurrency, and to consider implementing diskless RAM servers to further protect against data extraction.

You can compare HMA’s logging policy with those of other VPN services in the table below:

VPN Service Privacy Rating Logging Policy Jurisdiction Independently Verified
HideMyAss 8.0 No Logs UK
PIA VPN 9.7 No Logs United States
Surfshark 8.7 Connection Logs British Virgin Islands (BVI)
ExpressVPN 9.2 Connection Logs British Virgin Islands (BVI)
NordVPN 8.8 No Logs Panama
HMA’s Jurisdiction and Trustworthiness
HMA is Based in the United Kingdom

HideMyAss (HMA) is developed by Privax Ltd., which is currently owned by the Czech antivirus company Avast. Although Privax Ltd. is based in the UK, the ownership by a Czech firm does not alter its operational base.

Typically, the UK’s stringent data retention laws might raise concerns for VPN providers. However, HMA’s independently verified no-logs policy mitigates these concerns. Since HMA does not retain logs, there would be no data to disclose to UK authorities in the event of a court order or server seizure.

Enhanced Trustworthiness in Recent Years

Despite past incidents involving the disclosure of user connection logs to law enforcement, HMA has made significant strides in establishing itself as a reliable VPN service. These court orders occurred over a decade ago, under different ownership, and with a more intrusive logging policy.

With its current independently audited no-logs policy and a commendable track record in recent years, HMA can be recommended as a private and trustworthy VPN service.

Speed Performance

Fast Connection Speeds on Both Local and Distant Servers

Speed Rating: 9.5/10

HideMyAss (HMA) demonstrated consistently high speeds during our tests, positioning it among the top-performing VPN services. On local servers, our download speeds experienced only a minimal drop of 5%, from 100 Mbps to 95 Mbps. Internationally, HMA also performed admirably, with an 8% reduction in speed when connected to a distant UK server.

Ranked #11 out of 62 VPNs for Speed

To evaluate HMA’s speed performance, we tested various HMA servers worldwide, measuring download speeds, upload speeds, and ping.

Here’s a table summarizing HMA’s speed test results:

HMA’s performance on same-city connections is exceptional, with only seven other VPN services surpassing its local download speeds.

hma-windows-lightning-connect

High-Speed Performance Enhanced by 20Gbps Servers

HMA’s notable speed performance can be attributed to the introduction of 20Gbps servers in 2019, which has significantly narrowed the performance gap with the fastest VPNs available.

Expert Advice: For optimal local speeds, use the ‘Lightning Connect’ feature. This function automatically connects you to the fastest server based on distance and server load.

While HMA’s international speeds are commendable, they do not match the performance of its local connections. Our tests recorded an average download speed reduction of 20% when connecting to South Africa and 21% when connecting to Australia.

Although these results are impressive, they fall slightly short compared to the fastest VPNs on the market.

Comparison Chart:

Speed

As illustrated, HMA competes strongly with the fastest VPNs for short-distance connections but lags behind in international speed performance. Despite this, HMA’s speeds are more than sufficient for data-intensive activities such as 4K streaming, gaming, and torrenting.

Streaming Performance

Limited Access to Geo-Restricted Streaming Platforms

Streaming Rating: 4.0/10

HideMyAss (HMA) VPN is not an optimal choice for accessing geo-restricted streaming platforms. It successfully works with BBC iPlayer and, occasionally, Disney+, but it no longer unblocks US Netflix. Our tests also revealed that HMA could not access HBO Max, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video.

Ranked #30 out of 62 VPNs for Streaming

Streaming Test Results:
Streaming Platform Works with HideMyAss
Amazon Prime Video No
BBC iPlayer Yes
Channel 4 Yes
Disney+ Yes
Hotstar India No
Hulu No
ITVX Yes
Max No
Netflix US No

HMA VPN’s streaming capabilities are limited, with successful access only to BBC iPlayer and Disney+. While not entirely inadequate, HMA falls short compared to leading streaming VPNs. For instance, NordVPN reliably unblocks US Netflix, BBC iPlayer, HBO Max, Disney+, and other platforms without buffering issues.

Another limitation of HMA for streaming is its device compatibility. It lacks an app for Fire TV and does not offer Smart DNS support for Apple TV and gaming consoles. However, there is an app available for Android TV, and HMA can be installed on certain routers, though this process may be complex.

Consistent Access to BBC iPlayer

HMA’s dedicated UK streaming server, ‘Donkey Town’, consistently unblocks BBC iPlayer. This server is available in the default server list and is marked with a ‘play’ symbol for easy identification.

hidemyass-bbc-iplayer

Using HideMyAss (HMA), we were able to stream both on-demand and live content from BBC iPlayer in HD without experiencing buffering or quality drops. HMA’s performance in this regard is commendable; however, adding more dedicated UK streaming servers would help alleviate congestion and minimize potential disruptions from server overloads or downtime.

More Info : Best VPN

Ineffective with Netflix

Despite past successes, HMA has not been able to access US Netflix for over a year. Our attempts across all of HMA’s dedicated streaming servers on multiple devices have consistently failed to unblock US Netflix. Consequently, we have adjusted HMA’s streaming rating to 4.0 to reflect its diminished performance.

hma-us-netflix

HMA also offers dedicated streaming servers for the UK and Germany, but we were unable to unblock Netflix in these regions as well. In fact, HMA does not provide access to Netflix from any location.

For reliable access to Netflix, we recommend using a top-performing VPN such as ExpressVPN, which consistently unblocks 18 different Netflix libraries.

Challenges with Unblocking Disney+

HideMyAss (HMA) can access Disney+, but it often requires multiple attempts to find a functioning server. During our recent streaming tests, we had to cycle through several HMA servers before successfully connecting to Disney+.

hma-disney-plus-windows

For more reliable access to Disney+, we recommend using one of our top-rated Disney+ VPNs. In our evaluations, Surfshark demonstrated superior performance, successfully unblocking Disney+ on every server in its network.

Inability to Access Hulu and HBO Max

HideMyAss (HMA) VPN does not bypass geo-blocks on Hulu or HBO Max. This limitation has persisted for over three years of streaming tests with HMA VPN.

For reliable access to these platforms, we recommend using a VPN such as NordVPN, which has consistently proven effective in unblocking both Hulu and HBO Max without any issues.

Price & Value

Competitive Long-Term Pricing but Overpriced Short-Term Plans

Price & Value Rating: 7.5/10

HideMyAss (HMA) offers a competitive rate of $2.99 per month on its three-year plan, which is lower than most competitors. The service includes a seven-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee. However, its short-term plans are relatively expensive for the service quality and the array of options is somewhat overwhelming.

Ranked #12 out of 62 VPNs for Price & Value

Pricing Plans for Five Simultaneous Connections:
  • Monthly: $11.99 per month, billed monthly
  • 12 Months: $4.99 per month, billed $59.88 annually (58% savings)
  • 3 Years: $2.99 per month, billed $107.64 every three years (75% savings)

The annual plan at $4.99 per month offers good value, while the three-year plan provides the best rate, reducing the monthly cost by 75% to $2.99. Although long-term subscriptions are reasonably priced, HMA’s short-term plans are notably high and not prominently displayed, making them hard to locate.

For those needing more simultaneous connections, HMA offers an option for ten devices. The cost for the 12-month plan increases to $7.99 per month, and the three-year plan is $5.99 per month.

HMA VPN Free Trial

HMA provides a seven-day free trial, allowing you to evaluate the VPN without an immediate purchase. Payment details are required upon registration, but charges only apply after the trial period ends. The free trial grants full access to all server locations and unlimited bandwidth across all platforms. Ensure you cancel before the trial expires to avoid being charged the annual subscription fee of $83.88.

30-Day Money-Back Guarantee

HMA also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, with no questions asked. Even if you use significant data within this period, you remain eligible for a full refund. Auto-renewal is enabled by default but can be turned off in the member area of the website.

Payment & Refund Options

HMA accepts the following payment methods:

  • Alipay
  • American Express
  • Bank Wire / Direct Transfer
  • Giropay
  • Mastercard
  • PayPal
  • Visa

While this range of payment methods is adequate, the absence of cryptocurrency options is notable. Cryptocurrency payments would enhance privacy and offer more flexibility, especially in regions where traditional methods are restricted, such as Russia. We recommend HMA consider adopting payment methods like Bitcoin or cash for improved privacy and accessibility.

Server Locations

Extensive Global Coverage but Limited Server Count

Server Locations Rating: 9.5/10

HideMyAss (HMA) stands out as the leading VPN provider in terms of server locations, offering servers in 195 countries worldwide. It provides coverage in every inhabitable country, though its total server count is relatively modest at 1,080. This limited number of servers can occasionally result in congestion and reduced speeds.

Ranked #9 out of 62 VPNs for Server Locations
  • 195 Countries
  • 290 Cities
  • 1,080 IP Addresses

HMA offers comprehensive global coverage with servers in every region, ensuring broad geographic reach.

Continent Number of Countries
Europe 45
Asia 48
South America 19
North America 17
Africa 52
Oceania 14

HideMyAss (HMA) excels in offering VPN server locations, with servers available in 195 countries and 23 territories. This extensive coverage is unique to HMA, as no other VPN service we’ve tested provides servers in every country.

hma-windows-server-list

Despite its broad geographical reach, HMA’s network is comprised of only 1,080 servers, which is considerably fewer than leading competitors like PIA, which boasts 18,651 servers. This lower server count can result in potential congestion and slower connection speeds.

Unlike other VPN services that often concentrate their server networks in specific regions, such as the US and Western Europe, HMA ensures representation across every region. For instance, while 68% of NordVPN’s servers are situated in North America and Europe, only 32% of HMA’s servers are in these areas.

HMA’s coverage extends impressively to regions in Africa and the Middle East, surpassing many other VPN services in these areas.

However, HMA’s city-level server options are predominantly found in North America and Europe:

  • Australia: 2
  • Canada: 3
  • France: 2
  • Germany: 2
  • Russia: 2
  • Spain: 2
  • UK: 2
  • US: 65

City-level servers help reduce congestion and improve speeds. HMA’s 65 US locations are particularly beneficial for bypassing US sports blackouts.

While HMA’s city-level servers are concentrated in traditional locations, adding city-level servers in Asia, Africa, and South America would further enhance its network’s effectiveness.

The table below provides a comparison of HMA VPN’s server network with other VPN services:

VPN Service No. Of Servers No. Of Countries Average No. Of Servers Per Country
PIA 18,651 91 205
CyberGhost 12,000 100 107
NordVPN 6,328 111 57
IPVanish 2,200 53 42
ExpressVPN 3,000 106 28
HMA 1080 195 6

HMA VPN utilizes a combination of physical and virtual server locations. This approach allows HideMyAss to offer servers in a wide range of countries.

Unlike physical servers, virtual or “virtualized” servers provide an IP address in one country while the actual server is located elsewhere. For example, when connected to a Kenyan HMA server, the physical server is located in an Avast data center in Hallandale, Florida, as illustrated in the screenshot below.

hidemyass-virtual-servers-700x334

Virtual locations enable HMA VPN to provide IP addresses for geographic regions where establishing physical VPN servers is challenging, such as in China.

However, this method can sometimes result in slower internet speeds. This issue arises when connecting to a VPN server that appears to be close to your location but is, in reality, situated far away.

Torrenting

HMA VPN: An Excellent Choice for Torrenting

Torrenting Rating: 8.2/10

HMA VPN is well-suited for torrenting due to its high average bitrate of 9.6 MiB/s and P2P-optimized servers. Additionally, its strict no-logs policy and proprietary DNS servers help ensure that your torrenting activities remain anonymous and cannot be traced back to you.

Ranked #17 out of 62 VPNs for torrenting.

Here is a summary of HMA VPN’s performance in our recent torrenting tests:

Torrenting Attribute Result
Average Download Bitrate 9.6MiB/s
No. of P2P Servers 9
Logging Policy No Identifying Data
Kill Switch Yes
Port Forwarding No

We conducted tests on HMA VPN using the qBittorrent client and successfully downloaded a torrent file without encountering any issues.

hma-windows-torrenting

We recorded an impressive average bitrate of 9.6 MiB/s with HMA VPN, making it faster than most VPNs for torrenting. This performance is partly attributed to its dedicated P2P servers, which are available in eight locations, including both coasts of the US.

P2P-Optimized Server Locations:
  • Czech Republic
  • France
  • Germany
  • Netherlands
  • UK
  • US

While it is unlikely that HMA owns all of its P2P servers, as the service rents servers from third parties, this arrangement could pose some privacy and security risks. HMA, however, asserts that it maintains full control over the management of these rented servers. Additionally, HMA’s ownership of its DNS servers ensures that any torrent sites you access are only visible to the VPN service.

Previously, HMA suspended user accounts that received DMCA notices for torrenting copyrighted material. With the introduction of its enhanced logging policy, HMA VPN no longer tracks torrenting activities, allowing for safer use.

To further compete with leading torrenting VPNs, we recommend that HMA VPN introduces port forwarding to optimize its already impressive torrenting speeds and expands its P2P-optimized servers to better serve users globally.

Security & Technical Features

Safe to Use, but Needs Improved Feature Parity

Security & Technical Features Rating: 9.1/10

HideMyAss is a secure VPN that effectively masks your IP address and DNS requests with AES-256 encryption and proprietary DNS servers. It has also upgraded its Windows application to include the secure WireGuard protocol. However, we would like to see more feature parity, particularly the addition of a VPN kill switch on iOS.

Secure VPN Protocols & Encryption

HMA VPN employs AES-256 encryption to safeguard internet traffic. This encryption standard is highly secure and is utilized across all HMA apps to ensure the protection of your personal data.

More Info : Best VPN

The HMA Windows app supports WireGuard, OpenVPN, and Mimic protocols. WireGuard and OpenVPN are reputable open-source VPN protocols known for securely tunneling internet traffic.

Mimic, a proprietary protocol developed by Avast RSO, is a closed-source option that has been identified as experimental. Based on our Avast review, we recommend using OpenVPN or WireGuard for better reliability.

Currently, the HMA Android app supports only OpenVPN. While OpenVPN is a secure protocol, we would appreciate the addition of WireGuard in future updates.

The iOS and Mac apps use the IKEv2/IPSec protocol. Although IPSec is a widely used protocol, it is generally considered less secure and more vulnerable compared to OpenVPN and WireGuard.

We recommend that HMA VPN incorporate WireGuard and OpenVPN across all its applications to enhance overall security.

Our testing using Wireshark, a packet-sniffing tool, confirmed that HMA VPN effectively encrypts data transfers.

wireshark-encryption-test

Split Tunneling & Randomized IP Addresses

HMA VPN offers split tunneling on its Android app, allowing users to choose which apps use the VPN tunnel and which operate outside of it. While this feature is valuable, its availability exclusively on Android is a limitation.

Additionally, HMA provides an ‘IP Shuffle’ feature that assigns a new IP address within the same location if your current IP is blocked. This is beneficial for circumventing IP bans and avoiding potential trackers. Unfortunately, this feature is not available on iOS.

The current range of advanced features is limited, and we hope to see HMA expand its offerings in future updates.

Kill Switch for IP Leak Prevention

HMA VPN includes a kill switch for its Windows, Android, and Mac clients, designed to prevent data leaks if the VPN connection is lost. The Windows client also features an application-level kill switch, enabling users to disconnect specific apps from the internet if the VPN drops.

Application-level kill switches are relatively uncommon, even among top-rated VPN services such as ExpressVPN.

We tested HMA’s Windows kill switch with our in-house test tool and can confirm its effectiveness in preventing IP leaks.

hma-windows-kill-switch

HMA VPN Kill Switch and Leak Test Results

HMA VPN’s kill switch feature is not available on iOS devices, which is a significant drawback and may expose your personal data to risks. We hope HMA will address this issue in future updates.

HMA VPN Leak Test Results

We conducted a series of leak tests on HideMyAss and discovered that it leaked our IP address on iOS due to a VPN connection drop. However, HMA’s other applications did not experience IP or DNS leaks. This is attributed to HMA’s built-in IPv4 and IPv6 leak protection mechanisms.

Additionally, HideMyAss operates its own private DNS servers, ensuring that your browsing activity remains concealed from third parties.

The screenshot below illustrates how the HMA app successfully protected our real IP address, WebRTC, and DNS requests on Windows:

Technical Features We’d Like to See

HMA VPN lacks several technical features that are typically expected from a premium VPN service.

It appears that no additional features will be introduced, as the HMA development roadmap has been discontinued on the provider’s website.

However, if the development team is reinstated, here are some features we believe should be added to HMA VPN:

  • VPN Kill Switch on iOS: To protect your personal data in case of an unexpected VPN disconnection.
  • Multi-Hop Servers: For enhanced online anonymity and protection against traffic correlation attacks.
  • Smart DNS: To bypass streaming geo-blocks on devices that are not compatible with VPN software.
  • Diskless VPN Servers: To ensure that activity logs are erased immediately after a VPN disconnection.
  • Dedicated IP: To reliably unblock streaming platforms in specific geo-locations.

Top-tier VPNs, such as NordVPN, include all these features in their standard subscription. For HMA VPN to remain competitive, it needs to incorporate these features into its apps and maintain feature parity going forward.

Bypassing Web Censorship

HMA VPN: Ineffective for Censored Countries

Bypassing Censorship Rating: 3.5/10

Our tests confirm that HMA VPN is not effective in bypassing censorship in countries like China. Since our testing began in 2016, HMA has consistently failed to circumvent the Great Firewall of China. This means you will be unable to access popular apps and websites such as Instagram, Netflix, and WhatsApp. Moreover, HMA also does not work in other censored regions, including Russia and Iran.

Ranked #42 out of 62 VPNs for Bypassing Web Censorship

We conduct weekly tests on HideMyAss by remotely connecting to a test server in Shanghai. Unfortunately, since we began regular testing in 2019, HMA has never successfully operated in China. In fact, we were even blocked from signing into the HMA app.

Similar results were observed in other heavily restricted countries. In our most recent tests, HMA VPN failed to bypass VPN blocks in Russia and Iran.

The best VPNs for countries like China use obfuscation technology to bypass government-imposed VPN bans. This can include open-source solutions like the Shadowsocks proxy or proprietary technologies like Astrill’s stealth protocol. Unfortunately, HMA lacks such obfuscation tools, which explains its poor performance in our censorship tests.

Device & OS Compatibility

HideMyAss: Well-Designed Apps for Popular Devices

Device Compatibility

HideMyAss is available on all major platforms, including Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. However, its device compatibility is somewhat limited for streaming, as there is no dedicated app for Fire TV or Smart DNS functionality. With one HMA subscription, you can connect up to 10 devices simultaneously, which is more than what most VPN services offer.

Supported Devices:

  • Windows
  • Mac
  • iOS
  • Android
  • Linux
  • Routers

While all HMA VPN apps are user-friendly, there are significant differences between the operating systems. The Windows and Android apps are polished and feature-rich, whereas the iOS and macOS apps offer a more streamlined, simplified experience.

Below is a summary of the key differences between the HMA VPN apps:

Platform WireGuard Mimic Protocol OpenVPN (UDP & TCP) Split Tunneling Kill Switch App-Specific Kill Switch IP Shuffle
Windows
macOS
iOS
Android
10 Simultaneous Connections

With a single HMA subscription, you can connect up to 10 devices to a VPN server simultaneously, which is above the industry standard and sufficient for most users. However, this benefit is only available on HMA’s higher-priced plans, while the more affordable subscriptions are limited to five devices.

More Info : Best VPN

If you’re looking for a cost-effective VPN that supports multiple users, Surfshark is a strong alternative. It offers unlimited simultaneous connections for just $2.29 per month.

Streaming Device Support

HMA can be used on various devices, including Android TV, Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox, by manually installing it on a router. Unlike ExpressVPN, HMA does not offer a dedicated router app. Instead, users must manually install HMA onto their router, which can be challenging, or purchase a pre-flashed router with HMA software at a higher cost.

Unfortunately, HMA does not provide a Smart DNS tool, meaning the only way to use the VPN on devices like Apple TV or gaming consoles is through router installation.

Additionally, HideMyAss lacks a native application for Fire TV devices and does not offer an Android .apk file, making it impossible to sideload onto a Firestick. Once again, setting up a VPN router is the only viable solution.

On a positive note, HMA does have an app for Android TV. During our testing, we found HMA’s Android TV app to be user-friendly and straightforward to set up.

Ease of Use

Intuitive and Accessible VPN Apps

Ease of Use Rating: 9.2/10

HideMyAss (HMA) VPN offers some of the most user-friendly and intuitive VPN apps available. Our tests confirmed that all advanced settings are clearly labeled, and connecting to a VPN server is straightforward. While the features vary across platforms, the easy-to-use design is consistent.

Ranked #5 out of 62 VPNs for Ease of Use

To get started with HMA VPN, you simply need to create an account on the HMA website, choose a pricing plan, download the app to your preferred device, and enter your login details. The entire setup process took us about 10 minutes, and we encountered no issues.

On desktop, the HMA app initiates a secondary installer after the initial download, which completes quickly and only occurs on the first launch for Windows and Mac users.

Despite not having updated its app design since 2019, HMA’s apps remain easy to navigate, featuring a streamlined and intuitive user interface.

Desktop & Laptop (Windows & Mac)

HMA’s Windows and Mac apps share the same user-friendly interface, though they differ in available features.

hma-windows-vs-macos

Upon launching HMA for the first time, you’ll receive a brief tutorial on using the app and understanding its features—a valuable resource for VPN beginners. The side panel, which can be expanded at any time, offers comprehensive explanations for advanced settings.

To start your VPN connection, simply toggle the central button to ‘ON’—there’s no need to navigate through settings or server lists. If you want to change your VPN IP address, click the ‘shuffle’ button next to it. However, it would be more convenient if the option to change the VPN protocol was also available here, rather than requiring you to open a new window.

The desktop apps make it easy to view all 195 server locations, categorized by continent, P2P-optimized, and streaming. A search bar is also available for locating specific server locations.

One downside is that the settings open in a separate window, blocking the home screen. It’s not immediately clear that you need to close this window to return to the main app. Additionally, the option to change VPN protocol is filed under ‘Advanced’ rather than ‘Connection,’ which might confuse both beginners and experienced users.

We also found it inconvenient that the HMA app cannot be resized on Windows or Mac, making it difficult to use alongside another window, such as a torrenting client.

Mobile (iPhone & Android)

HMA’s mobile apps are sleek and easy to use, with a simple, uncluttered interface. You can connect to a VPN server by tapping the connect button on the home screen. Both apps support the Lightning Connect feature (labeled as ‘Optimal Location’ on iOS), allowing for a quick connection without selecting a specific server location.

hma-android-vs-ios

However, the iOS app is the least functional among HMA’s offerings, with almost no configurability. The only setting available is ‘Connection Rules,’ limited to basic toggles for cellular data and trusted Wi-Fi networks. Notably, it lacks essential features such as a VPN kill switch, protocol selection, and split tunneling.

In contrast, the Android app offers more advanced features, including IP Shuffle, a kill switch, TCP-only mode, and split tunneling. These features can be easily accessed via tabs at the bottom of the home screen.

Despite the ease of use, we were disappointed that HMA hasn’t added any mobile-specific features to either app. There’s no dark mode option, and the apps don’t take advantage of iOS or Android integrations, resulting in a user experience that feels more aligned with desktop than mobile.

Android TV App

HMA VPN’s custom Android TV app maintains the user-friendly design of its desktop and mobile counterparts. The app allows you to use the Lightning Connect button to quickly connect to the nearest available server or choose from one of HMA’s 195 server locations, with a search function and continent-based tabs for easier navigation.

During our tests, the app performed well, allowing us to stream US Netflix and BBC iPlayer directly on a TV screen without issues.

The Android TV app is compatible with all Android-powered Smart TVs and streaming devices, including Chromecast with Google TV. It also includes useful settings such as split tunneling, a VPN kill switch, and IP Shuffle.

Customer Support

Inaccurate and Unreliable Service

Customer Support Rating: 5.1/10
HMA VPN’s customer support is notably unreliable and poorly maintained. The discontinuation of live chat and the lengthy delays—often months—for email responses highlight the service’s shortcomings. While HMA’s website offers some useful resources, much of the information is outdated and inaccurate.

For a paid service, HMA VPN’s customer support is among the worst we’ve encountered. The website hasn’t seen new content since 2021, and the copyright for HMA expired in 2022, raising concerns that the support team may have been entirely disbanded.

Despite advertising live chat, it has been discontinued, and our team experienced wait times of up to six months for email support responses.

On the positive side, HMA is supported by an extensive online knowledge base, featuring detailed guides, FAQs, and video walkthroughs. However, the quality of the written guides is inconsistent—one guide incorrectly stated that HMA only supports OpenVPN.

Adding to the disappointment, HMA has also shut down its community forum, leaving users with limited options for seeking help.
