ExpressVPN: Compatible with All Major Streaming Platforms
Streaming Rating: 9.9/10
ExpressVPN is the top-rated VPN for bypassing geo-restrictions on streaming websites. During our testing, it successfully accessed US Netflix, Hulu, YouTube TV, and BBC iPlayer from any location. Additionally, it is one of the few VPNs that offer Smart DNS functionality, enabling use on virtually all digital media players.

For detailed insights into ExpressVPN’s streaming capabilities, please refer to the following sections.
Access to US Netflix and 17 Additional Regions
Over the past 12 months, ExpressVPN has consistently provided access to US Netflix in all tests. Videos load instantly and stream in HD without any buffering issues.
It’s important to note, however, that the default US server on ExpressVPN does not support Netflix streaming. Users must manually connect to the “USA – New Jersey – 1” server location to access Netflix.
While other VPN providers often automatically connect users to a server optimized for streaming, we would recommend that ExpressVPN consider implementing a similar feature.
Unlike many other VPN review platforms, we rigorously test each VPN with Netflix across all server locations. These tests are conducted weekly to ensure the data remains current and reliable.
Below, we present the results of our testing with ExpressVPN across popular Netflix regions, highlighting the frequency with which ExpressVPN successfully accesses each region.

Limited Access to Certain Netflix Libraries
It is worth noting that ExpressVPN does not provide access to some popular Netflix libraries, such as those in South Korea and Mexico. For users seeking to unblock a broader range of international Netflix libraries, Windscribe may be a more suitable alternative.
Access to YouTube TV, Hulu, and All Major US Streaming Services
ExpressVPN enables access to US streaming services from any location. We successfully connected to Disney+, Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, and even bypassed blocks on YouTube TV.
Unlike with Netflix, all US-based ExpressVPN servers, including those in New York and San Francisco, provided seamless access to these platforms.
In every instance, videos loaded within one second, consistently maintaining maximum quality at 4K or 1080p without any buffering issues.
Unblocking BBC iPlayer and Sky Go
ExpressVPN effectively bypasses geo-restrictions on BBC iPlayer across all five of its UK servers. This allowed us to stream live and on-demand content in HD, including popular shows like Match of the Day and Top Gear.
Previously, ExpressVPN was not the ideal choice for accessing BBC iPlayer, requiring the use of the VPN’s browser extensions or MediaStreamer Smart DNS service. We are pleased to see that ExpressVPN has made significant improvements in its streaming performance.
Additionally, ExpressVPN proved to be a reliable option for accessing other UK streaming platforms. It successfully worked with Sky Go, Now TV, Channel 4, and ITVX. It also stands out as the best VPN for France, effectively unblocking all French streaming services.
Secure Option for Kodi Streaming
ExpressVPN is a strong choice for securely streaming Kodi content, particularly with its user-friendly app for Firestick and Android TV Kodi boxes. While connected, we streamed non-copyrighted content from popular Kodi add-ons like Popcornflix and Crackle, ensuring that Kodi activity remained hidden from ISPs.
Speed
Fast Connection Speeds in Every Location
Speed Rating: 9.7/10
Based on our most recent speed tests, ExpressVPN ranks among the fastest VPN services available, surpassing PIA, NordVPN, and several other leading competitors. Utilizing its Lightway protocol, we observed speed losses of just 3%, ensuring optimal performance for demanding online activities such as gaming, streaming, and video calls.
Ranked #5 out of 62 VPNs for Speed
To evaluate ExpressVPN’s performance, we connected to servers across six different continents, using a 100Mbps internet connection similar to typical home broadband speeds.
Below is a table illustrating ExpressVPN’s speed test results:

Speed Analysis
As the data indicates, connecting to a nearby server resulted in a minimal impact on our download speed, with only a 3% loss. This suggests that regardless of your location, you can expect consistently high speeds when connecting to servers in close proximity.
To provide further context, the following chart compares ExpressVPN’s local speed performance with other leading VPN services:
ExpressVPN outperforms PureVPN by 16Mbps when connected to a nearby server. It also shows a slight edge over CyberGhost and NordVPN, with an average speed advantage of approximately 2%.
However, it is important to note that ExpressVPN’s international speeds have shown some decline recently, making it no longer the fastest VPN for distant servers. Specifically, we observed a 27% speed decrease in South Africa and a 7% reduction in Germany compared to previous tests.
Fast Ping for Lag-Free Gaming
ExpressVPN’s impressive speed performance makes it an excellent choice for gaming. We recorded an 8ms ping time on a nearby server, which is faster than nearly every other VPN we’ve tested.
When using ExpressVPN on Xbox, our connection was swift enough to handle fast-paced games like Warzone and CS. The VPN consistently delivered the necessary speed for competitive gaming on every local server we evaluated.
Additionally, ExpressVPN offers servers in countries like Egypt and Argentina, where you might find less challenging gaming lobbies. However, as expected, ping times increase significantly when connecting to more distant servers. For optimal performance, especially in fast-paced games, we recommend using servers within your own country.
Privacy & Logging Policy
Doesn’t Store Any User Data
Privacy & Logging Policy Rating: 9.2/10
ExpressVPN is recognized as a reliable VPN service with a robust commitment to user privacy. The service does not retain any personally identifiable information, such as IP addresses or DNS queries. Moreover, being headquartered in the British Virgin Islands, ExpressVPN benefits from the absence of data retention laws.
Privacy & Logging Policy Ranking:
Ranked #8 out of 62 VPNs for Privacy & Logging Policy.
Below is a table summarizing the types of data that ExpressVPN logs:
Data Type | Logged by ExpressVPN |
---|---|
Account Information | Yes |
Browsing Activity | No |
Date of Last Connection | Yes |
Device Information | No |
DNS Queries | No |
Individual Bandwidth Usage | Yes |
Individual Connection Timestamps | No |
ISP | No |
Number of Simultaneous Connections | No |
Originating IP Address | No |
VPN Server IP | No |
VPN Server Location | Yes |
ExpressVPN collects significantly less data compared to most VPN providers. It also offers an anonymous payment option during sign-up, and its use of a diskless server network ensures that no activity data is logged.
That said, ExpressVPN does collect some anonymous connection logs, such as the date of your last connection and the amount of bandwidth used. This data is solely for diagnostic purposes and service improvement.
Importantly, this information cannot be used by third parties to trace your online activity. This has been repeatedly confirmed through real-world scenarios, including server raids and third-party audits.
While ExpressVPN has demonstrated its commitment to privacy, a true no-logs policy, as adopted by services like Private Internet Access and PrivateVPN, would be preferable.
The table below provides a comparison of ExpressVPN’s logging policy with other leading VPN services:
VPN Service | Logging Policy | Jurisdiction | Independent Audit |
---|---|---|---|
ExpressVPN | No Identifying Data | British Virgin Islands (Privacy Haven) | Yes |
NordVPN | No Identifying Data | Panama (Privacy Haven) | Yes |
PIA VPN | No Logs | US (Five Eyes Member) | Yes |
Surfshark | No Identifying Data | Netherlands (EU Member) | Yes |
PrivateVPN | No Logs | Sweden (14 Eyes Member) | Yes |
Based in a Privacy-Friendly Jurisdiction
ExpressVPN is headquartered in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), an ideal location for a VPN provider. The BVI has no mandatory data retention laws, allowing ExpressVPN to uphold the commitments outlined in its logging policy effectively.
Additionally, the BVI is not a member of any data-sharing alliances, such as the Five Eyes. This means that other governments and agencies cannot compel ExpressVPN to disclose any user information.
ExpressVPN Is Owned by Kape Technologies
In 2021, ExpressVPN was acquired by Kape Technologies, a development that sparked some controversy due to Kape’s past involvement with a software development kit (SDK) that was used by third parties for ad injection and malware distribution.
However, it’s important to note that Kape Technologies was not directly involved in the creation or distribution of the adware and malware. These were the actions of third parties using Kape’s platform, which was discontinued in 2016, well before the acquisition of ExpressVPN.
Since the acquisition, ExpressVPN’s logging and privacy practices have only strengthened. Kape Technologies also owns two other reputable VPN services, CyberGhost and Private Internet Access.
Security & Technical Features
Secure, but Limited in Technical Features
Security & Technical Features Rating: 9.6/10
ExpressVPN is an exceptionally secure VPN service, successfully passing all of our security assessments. However, there is still room for enhancement. For instance, ExpressVPN utilizes its proprietary Lightway protocol instead of the widely recognized WireGuard. Additionally, during testing, the macOS app exposed our IP address when switching between servers.

ExpressVPN Utilizes a Proprietary VPN Protocol
ExpressVPN employs a unique VPN tunneling protocol that distinguishes it from other VPN services. While a preference for more established technologies exists, given their extensive testing and user feedback, ExpressVPN’s default protocol, Lightway, is exclusively developed by the company. This protocol utilizes the AES-256 encryption standard, ensuring a high level of security for sensitive data.
Lightway is an open-source protocol, allowing for public scrutiny of its codebase. While this transparency helps foster trust, it may not match the reliability of more widely adopted open-source protocols, such as WireGuard. Although Lightway has demonstrated commendable performance in our security evaluations, we recommend that ExpressVPN consider incorporating WireGuard as an additional option.
Consistent with industry standards, ExpressVPN implements Perfect Forward Secrecy, a 4096-bit RSA key, and SHA-512 HMAC authentication. This combination effectively conceals user web activity and safeguards against real-time data alterations by potential attackers.
Kill Switch Functionality
All ExpressVPN applications feature a ‘Network Lock’ kill switch. It is uncommon for kill switches to be available across all platforms, including Fire TV and iOS, so we commend ExpressVPN for maintaining this functionality universally.
To assess the effectiveness of ExpressVPN’s kill switch, we utilized an in-house testing tool to monitor for IP address leaks following an unexpected disconnection. The results, as illustrated in the accompanying screenshot, confirm that ExpressVPN’s kill switch effectively prevented our actual IP address from leaking outside the VPN tunnel.
However, it is noteworthy that we identified a vulnerability in ExpressVPN’s macOS app, which leaks IP addresses when switching to a different server location. While the app provides a warning prior to this action, the lack of a complete resolution to this issue is concerning.
Success in Leak Tests
We conducted a series of IP, DNS, and WebRTC leak tests on ExpressVPN, all of which it passed successfully, confirming that no network traffic leaks occurred and that our personal information remained protected. The accompanying screenshot demonstrates that ExpressVPN effectively masked our actual UK network details.
ExpressVPN utilizes first-party DNS servers, meaning it manages and encrypts DNS requests rather than relying on the user’s ISP. This feature is not commonly found in many VPN services.
For enhanced security, we recommend that ExpressVPN develop support for IPv6 addresses. Currently, the service blocks the user’s true IPv6 address but does not substitute it with a VPN server address, which could lead to potential leaks if the blocking feature fails.
Secure Browser Extensions
Unlike many VPN browser extensions that merely function as basic web proxies without encrypting network traffic, ExpressVPN’s apps and extensions ensure that all traffic is encrypted, including activity conducted outside the web browser. We verified this using Wireshark, a tool for analyzing individual data packets, and found that ExpressVPN successfully concealed the websites accessed and obfuscated data on unsecured HTTP sites.
Diskless Servers Ensure No Logging
In contrast to most VPNs that store server data on hard drives, ExpressVPN operates diskless servers, referred to as TrustServer. This innovative feature prevents any logging of user data and eliminates the risk of data extraction by hackers.
ExpressVPN is among the few VPN providers to have undergone a third-party audit of its diskless server network. The audit conducted by Cure53 confirmed that all of ExpressVPN’s servers are diskless and that “no IP addresses or personally identifiable information (PII) can be written to physical disk.”
Moreover, all servers are owned and operated by ExpressVPN, minimizing the potential for interference by hackers or malicious actors.
Threat Manager: A Sufficient Ad and Tracker Blocker
ExpressVPN’s applications feature an ad and tracker blocker known as Threat Manager.
Based on our data, Threat Manager successfully blocks approximately 60% of ads and trackers. In comparison, competitors like Private Internet Access and Atlas VPN achieve over 80% effectiveness in this regard.
While Threat Manager is a valuable addition that improves the protection of your web activity against data profiling, there are more effective alternatives available in the market.
Technical Features We Would Like to See
ExpressVPN currently offers fewer advanced features compared to other leading premium VPN services. Below are some technical enhancements we believe would benefit ExpressVPN:
- Always-On Kill Switch: Implement a feature that blocks all network traffic, even when the VPN connection is disrupted.
- Dedicated IP Address: Provide users with the option of a dedicated IP address to mitigate issues related to IP address blocklisting and CAPTCHA prompts on search engines.
- Multi-Hop Servers: Introduce multi-hop server capabilities to enhance the security and privacy of VPN connections.
- Open-Source Software: Transition to open-source software to improve transparency and allow the broader community to assess the security of ExpressVPN’s applications.
- WireGuard Support: Incorporate support for WireGuard, enabling users to connect via a fast, open-source, and widely adopted tunneling protocol.
While ExpressVPN may lack some common features, the app’s simplicity remains one of its most significant advantages. Should the company decide to integrate these requested features, we hope they are implemented discreetly to prevent overwhelming users with unnecessary options.
Price & Value
How Much Does ExpressVPN Cost?
Price & Value Rating: 7.5/10
ExpressVPN is priced at $6.67 per month, which is approximately double the cost of its primary competitors. However, this pricing reflects the high quality of the service offered. A seven-day free trial is available for mobile sign-ups, and all subscription plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Additionally, users can opt to pay anonymously using Bitcoin.
ExpressVPN is ranked #12 out of 62 VPNs for price and value.
Subscription Plans:
- Monthly Plan: $12.95 per month (billed monthly)
- 6-Month Plan: $9.99 per month (billed $59.95 every 6 months)
- 15-Month Plan: $6.67 per month (billed $99.95 for the first 15 months, then $116.95 annually thereafter)
Although these prices are above average for VPN services and higher than those of competitors, ExpressVPN maintains consistent pricing even after the initial subscription period, unlike many other VPNs that increase their prices significantly after the promotional period.
For example, Surfshark, a leading budget VPN, is initially priced 70% lower than ExpressVPN. However, after 12 months, its cost doubles, making it only 40% cheaper. The superior performance of ExpressVPN justifies the additional expense for those who can accommodate it.
ExpressVPN Free Trial
While there is no completely free version, ExpressVPN does offer a seven-day free trial for new users on Android or iOS devices. Once registered, users can access the ExpressVPN app on any device using their new account credentials.
Additionally, all subscription plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee, allowing users to test the VPN before committing to a long-term subscription. In our testing, we contacted customer support within 30 days of signing up and received a full refund within five days.
Payment Methods
ExpressVPN accepts a wide range of payment methods, including:
- Alipay
- American Express
- Bitcoin
- Giropay
- iDeal
- Klarna
- Mastercard
- Mint
- PayPal
- SOFORT
- UnionPay
- Visa
- WebMoney
- Yoo Money (Yandex.money)
Torrenting
An Exceptional Choice for File Sharing
Torrenting Rating: 9.3/10
In our evaluations, ExpressVPN consistently demonstrated superior performance in downloading P2P files, surpassing many competitors. With all 3,000 of its servers supporting torrenting activity, users can engage in file sharing with confidence. The inclusion of a kill switch and a robust private logging policy ensures that your ISP cannot monitor your P2P activities. While the absence of port forwarding may be noted, ExpressVPN’s speed is sufficient to meet user needs without it.
Ranked #2 out of 62 VPNs for Torrenting
Below is a summary of ExpressVPN’s performance in our torrenting assessments:
Torrenting Attribute | Result |
---|---|
Average Download Bitrate | 9.4MiB/s |
No. of P2P Servers | 3,000 |
Logging Policy | No Identifying Data |
Kill Switch | Yes |
Port Forwarding | No |
With its robust AES-256 encryption and a stringent private logging policy, ExpressVPN stands out as one of the safest options for torrenting. Unlike many other VPN services, ExpressVPN has no record of forwarding DMCA requests to its users.
We conducted tests using various torrent clients, including qBittorrent, uTorrent, and Deluge. In each instance, the VPN successfully concealed our IP address and all personal information, ensuring that our activities remained hidden from both our ISP and other third parties.
Fast P2P File Transfers, but No Port Forwarding
We also assessed ExpressVPN’s torrenting speeds through our proprietary P2P speed test process. Despite the lack of port forwarding support, our findings indicate that ExpressVPN ranks among the fastest VPNs for torrenting. The average download speed reached 9.4 MiB/s, allowing us to download files of any size almost as quickly as if we were not using a VPN.
Below, we provide a comparison of the download speed for a 20GB torrent file using ExpressVPN in relation to other leading VPNs:
VPN Service | Download Bitrate | Time To Download 20GB Torrent File |
---|---|---|
No VPN | 10MiB/s | 32 minutes |
ExpressVPN | 9.4MiB/s | 34 minutes |
Private Internet Access | 9.6MiB/s | 33 minutes |
CyberGhost | 3.9MiB/s | 81 minutes |
While ExpressVPN may not be the fastest P2P VPN we have evaluated, its effect on torrent download speeds is nearly imperceptible.
Server Locations
Countries with ExpressVPN Servers
Server Locations Rating: 9.9/10
ExpressVPN boasts servers in 106 countries, ranking it second among the 62 VPNs we tested. This extensive network allows users to obtain an IP address from nearly any location worldwide. However, it is worth noting that ExpressVPN offers fewer city-specific server options compared to some of its competitors.
Ranked #1 out of 62 VPNs for Server Locations
With ExpressVPN, you can connect to servers in the following regions:
Continent | Countries with Servers |
---|---|
Europe | 47 |
Asia | 26 |
North America | 13 |
South America | 10 |
Africa | 6 |
Oceania | 3 |
As demonstrated, ExpressVPN provides servers in numerous locations. On each continent, this VPN offers users the opportunity to obtain IP addresses from significantly more countries than other leading VPNs, including 15 additional countries compared to PIA VPN.
However, there are still some popular regions that are not covered. We recommend that ExpressVPN consider adding virtual locations in the UAE and Russia in future updates.
Limited City-Based Server Locations Compared to Competitors
ExpressVPN offers connections to servers located in specific cities across 14 countries, facilitating proximity to the nearest server and enabling access to localized content, such as circumventing MLB blackouts or viewing out-of-market NFL games.
Nevertheless, ExpressVPN features fewer city-based servers than some competing VPN services. For instance, while ExpressVPN provides server access in 12 states within the United States, Private Internet Access allows users to obtain an IP address from all 50 states, and HMA offers servers in 48 states.
Bypassing Web Censorship
Effectiveness in China
Bypassing Censorship Rating: 9.0/10
ExpressVPN is a reliable option for accessing blocked websites and applications in regions with web censorship. However, its effectiveness in China has become inconsistent. In contrast, ExpressVPN continues to perform reliably in countries such as Russia, Iran, and other areas with internet restrictions.
Ranked #5 out of 62 VPNs for Bypassing Web Censorship.
Unlike other VPN review platforms, we conduct weekly tests of ExpressVPN using a PC located in China. Over the past year, ExpressVPN has achieved a success rate of 64%. In comparison, other VPN services, such as Astrill, have maintained a 100% success rate.
Integrated Obfuscation Technology for Enhanced Internet Access
Unlike other VPN services, ExpressVPN incorporates obfuscation technology into all of its servers, eliminating the need for manual configuration or specialized app installations. This makes it one of the easiest VPNs to use for circumventing internet censorship.
ExpressVPN effectively disguises your VPN traffic as regular web traffic, enabling access to restricted websites and applications. Its capability is so robust that it successfully bypasses internet censorship in the UAE, Russia, Iran, and other highly restrictive nations.
However, it would be beneficial if ExpressVPN disclosed the specific type of obfuscation technology employed. Clarity on whether it utilizes a third-party solution, such as Shadowsocks or Obfsproxy, or if it has developed a proprietary solution would enhance user understanding.
In the event of connection issues, ExpressVPN conveniently provides an updated list of servers that are operational in China.
Expert Tip: The official ExpressVPN website may be blocked in censored countries, so be sure to download the latest version of the app prior to your arrival.
Device and Operating System Compatibility
ExpressVPN: Compatibility Across a Wide Range of Devices
ExpressVPN boasts compatibility with more devices than any other VPN service available. In addition to its standard desktop and mobile applications, it features an excellent browser-based app for routers and a Smart DNS option. ExpressVPN supports up to eight simultaneous connections, which is slightly above the industry average.
Supported Devices
ExpressVPN offers applications for the following platforms:
- Windows
- Mac
- iOS
- Android
- Linux
- Router
- ChromeOS
While ExpressVPN provides a consistent user experience across all platforms, certain features may not be available on every operating system. For instance, split tunneling is not supported on the iOS or Linux applications.
Game Consoles and Streaming Devices
ExpressVPN offers compatibility with a range of digital media players through its streaming device applications, router app, and Smart DNS feature. The supported devices include:
- Apple TV
- Amazon Fire TV
- Android TV
- Chromecast
- Nintendo
- PlayStation
- Roku
- Smart TVs
- Xbox
It is important to note that when using MediaStreamer, users cannot manually select an IP address location. Instead, this feature is designed to work with a predefined list of compatible streaming services, such as US Netflix, HBO Max, and BBC iPlayer. To change your location for streaming services like Japanese Netflix, you will need to utilize ExpressVPN’s router app.
Browser Extensions
ExpressVPN provides extensions for the following web browsers:
- Chrome
- Microsoft Edge
- Firefox
These browser extensions are distinct in that they encrypt all web traffic, not just the activity conducted within the browser. For a detailed analysis of the security features of ExpressVPN’s Chrome extension, please refer to our security review.
Ease of Use
Intuitive Apps Requiring Only a Single Click
Ease of Use Rating: 9.9/10
ExpressVPN is designed for effortless usability, eliminating any learning curve. Users can simply click the prominent ‘on’ button to activate the service. The application automatically selects the most suitable protocol and server location based on your network and geographical location. Additionally, the app maintains a consistent user experience across all platforms, allowing seamless operation on any device.
Ranked #1 Out of 62 VPNs for Ease of Use
Our evaluation revealed that installing, setting up, and using ExpressVPN is remarkably straightforward. After selecting a subscription plan, users create an account and provide payment details.
Following subscription, a confirmation email containing an activation code and a link to the installation guide for the chosen device is promptly received.
Fortunately, ExpressVPN underwent a significant design update in 2021, addressing previous criticisms regarding its outdated appearance and usability challenges on certain platforms. The redesigned interface enhances the overall user experience while ensuring a cohesive design across devices.
Here is a more detailed overview of the interface for each ExpressVPN application:
Desktop & Laptop (Windows & Mac)
Unlike many VPN providers that offer subpar Mac applications compared to their Windows counterparts, ExpressVPN delivers virtually identical desktop apps for both platforms. This consistency is beneficial, as ExpressVPN’s desktop applications are among the most intuitive VPN solutions available.
Users can customize the home screen to include shortcuts to frequently visited websites; however, we appreciate that this feature can be easily disabled in the settings for a cleaner interface.
During our usage, we found that 80% of the time, activating ExpressVPN simply required opening the app and clicking the prominent ‘on’ button located at the center of the home screen. We only navigated away from the home screen when switching to an international server, such as when accessing geo-blocked content.
The server list is also straightforward to navigate. ‘Recommended’ servers are selected by default, although this does not display the complete server list. Users must click ‘All Locations’ to access the full list or utilize the search bar to locate specific servers. However, we would like to see additional information about each server, such as ping and server load, to help determine the optimal connection.
Mobile (iPhone & Android)
ExpressVPN’s mobile applications closely resemble the desktop versions in both appearance and functionality. The interface prominently features a large connect button, and users can switch servers using the same server list.
A notable distinction is that the Android app includes a Protection Summary at the bottom half of the home screen, which displays the duration of your connection to an ExpressVPN server over the past week, as well as the IP address of the VPN server.
However, we find the Protection Summary feature to be of limited value and believe it detracts from the app’s usability. The information it provides may be overwhelming for beginners. Fortunately, this feature can be disabled in the app settings.
We would prefer the app to utilize this space for more functional buttons, similar to PIA’s mobile applications, which allow users to connect to up to six server locations directly from the home screen.
One drawback is the absence of a dark mode in the mobile applications.
Linux App
Regrettably, ExpressVPN does not offer a graphical user interface (GUI) application for Linux. Instead, users must operate the app through the command line.
For those who are not advanced users, ExpressVPN can be challenging to install and use on Linux. We favor VPNs that provide true Linux applications, such as Private Internet Access and Proton VPN, which offer a more user-friendly experience similar to other platforms.
Router App
In contrast to other VPN services, ExpressVPN provides a browser-based app for routers, making it the premier choice for VPNs on routers.
Setting up ExpressVPN’s router app requires no technical expertise and remains intuitive once installed. The app functions similarly to other ExpressVPN applications, featuring a GUI for changing servers and adjusting VPN settings.
For those looking to avoid setup altogether, ExpressVPN offers the Aircove router, which comes pre-installed with ExpressVPN. However, it is priced at a premium.
Router Functionality
For VPNs lacking a dedicated router app, users must download a new server file and restart the router each time they wish to change their IP address. In our tests, this process could take up to 15 minutes, whereas ExpressVPN’s router app accomplishes the same task in just five seconds.
CAPTCHA Challenges
While using ExpressVPN for web browsing, we encountered CAPTCHAs more frequently than with any other VPN service. This significantly detracted from the overall user experience, as completing these CAPTCHAs often took over 10 seconds.
To address this issue, we recommend that ExpressVPN refresh its server IP addresses more frequently or limit the number of users who can connect to a single server IP address. Additionally, a dedicated IP feature would be advantageous for users willing to pay a premium.
Streaming Devices (Fire TV, Apple TV & Android TV)
ExpressVPN’s applications for Fire TV, Apple TV, and Android TV are well-designed and user-friendly, featuring a dark mode interface that enhances text readability on larger screens.
However, the inclusion of a light mode option would cater to user preferences. The apps organize server locations by continent and employ an intuitive visual design, simplifying the process of selecting the desired server location.
The overall user interface is consistent with other ExpressVPN applications, ensuring a seamless experience when connecting to servers or adjusting settings.
MediaStreamer
MediaStreamer is ExpressVPN’s Smart DNS tool, allowing users to bypass geo-blocks on devices that do not support VPN software, such as Smart TVs and gaming consoles.
During our research, we successfully configured MediaStreamer with Apple TV by manually updating the device’s DNS settings. While the setup process is straightforward, it is important to note that users must update their IP address on the ExpressVPN website whenever it changes; failure to do so will result in a disrupted connection.
We recommend that ExpressVPN introduce secure DNS options, such as DNS-over-HTTPS, to eliminate the need for IP address updates for authentication.
Regrettably, ExpressVPN does not specify which streaming services are compatible with MediaStreamer. To obtain this information, users must contact customer support, which often took us over five minutes to receive a response. Most other VPN providers with Smart DNS features typically provide a comprehensive list of supported streaming applications on their websites.
Browser Extensions
ExpressVPN’s browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge function as remote controls for the desktop application, making them just as user-friendly.
All browser-specific features, including WebRTC blocking and HTTPS Everywhere, are enabled by default, allowing users to benefit from the extension’s capabilities without the need for advanced configuration.
Interestingly, unlike the desktop applications, ExpressVPN’s browser extensions offer a dark mode interface. We believe this feature should also be available as an option for the mobile and desktop applications.
Customer Support
Knowledgeable Yet Slow Live Chat Support
Customer Support Rating: 9.8/10
ExpressVPN offers exceptional customer support options, including a 24/7 live chat service, responsive email support, and a comprehensive collection of detailed guides and tutorials. The most effective way to obtain assistance with basic inquiries is to contact ExpressVPN’s knowledgeable live chat support team, available 24/7. During our testing, we reached out over 50 times, and each agent was able to resolve our issues promptly.
However, one drawback is that ExpressVPN’s support agents tend to have longer response times compared to other VPN providers. On average, we experienced a wait time of 126 seconds for a response, while NordVPN averaged only 38 seconds.
This extended wait time is partially due to ExpressVPN’s agents adhering to a structured conversation script before addressing customer inquiries. We believe that removing this requirement would enable agents to provide immediate answers to questions.
Additionally, we recommend that ExpressVPN consider implementing an automated chatbot to handle basic queries, such as locating compatible streaming servers. Chatbots can deliver instant responses, minimizing the need to wait for human assistance.
Despite these areas for improvement, ExpressVPN remains a leader in the industry regarding customer support, thanks to its extensive collection of support guides, FAQs, video tutorials, and troubleshooting resources available on its website.
