Our Verdict

Overall Rating: 7.8/10

FastestVPN offers considerable value, particularly with its lifetime deal, making it one of the most cost-effective VPN options available. It performs well for streaming and is accessible for beginners. However, it has areas that need improvement: DNS request and IPv6 data leaks on Windows and occasional user experience issues due to bugs. Despite these shortcomings, FastestVPN remains a budget-friendly choice for reliable streaming.

FastestVPN Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Cost-effective lifetime subscription
  • Strong privacy and logging policy
  • Excellent for international streaming
  • Responsive live chat support
  • Unrestricted torrenting

Cons:

  • DNS request leaks on Windows app
  • No IPv6 support, leading to potential leaks
  • Occasional connection failures and bugs

  • Issues with router installation
FastestVPN stands out primarily for its strengths in streaming and privacy. It boasts an audited privacy policy and excels in bypassing geo-restrictions on popular streaming platforms globally, including DAZN for sports, Channel 4 and BBC iPlayer for British TV, and access to five different Netflix libraries, including the US.

Offering exceptional value through its $40.00 lifetime subscription deal, FastestVPN also provides commendable live chat support and imposes no restrictions on torrenting.

However, it is constrained by a limited server network, occasional functionality issues, a brief refund window, and the lack of the advanced WireGuard protocol. While it offers strong features, FastestVPN still has room for improvement to compete with the top VPN services in the market.

Privacy & Logging Policy

FastestVPN’s Privacy Policy: Audited & Verified

Privacy & Logging Policy Rating: 8.5/10

FastestVPN maintains a stringent privacy policy, logging minimal data: only your email address, connection duration, and payment information. This data is deleted once you deactivate your account. Based in the Cayman Islands, a renowned privacy jurisdiction, FastestVPN operates without any known scandals or controversies. The recent third-party audit of its logging policy has significantly enhanced our confidence in the service.

Privacy & Logging Policy

For a comprehensive understanding of FastestVPN’s privacy practices, you can review its full privacy policy on its website.

FastestVPN effectively outlines the user information it collects and retains. The recent successful audit by the independent firm Altius IT has further bolstered our confidence in its commitment to privacy.

Cayman Islands Jurisdiction

FastestVPN operates under the jurisdiction of the Cayman Islands, a renowned privacy haven. The jurisdiction lacks mandatory data retention laws such as those imposed by the EU’s Data Retention Directive and is not affiliated with intelligence-sharing alliances like the Five Eyes. Additionally, FastestVPN adheres to its own Data Protection Law.

FastestVPN Ownership Transparency

FastestVPN could enhance its trustworthiness by publishing regular transparency reports that detail any law enforcement requests it has received—a common practice in the industry. We also seek greater transparency regarding the company behind FastestVPN. Currently, the website provides minimal information, stating only that it was founded by “a team of dedicated IT specialists.”

While this level of confidentiality is typical for privacy-focused companies, understanding the corporate structure of VPN services is crucial for assessing their reliability.

When inquired, FastestVPN provided the following details:

“We are located at the Grand Pavilion Commercial Center, West Bay Road, Cayman Islands. Our Marketing and Support teams are based in Dallas, Texas. The brand is owned by Fast Technologies Ltd.”

Public information about Fast Technologies Ltd. is scarce. It was founded in 2017 by Pakistani businessman Azneem Bilwani, who was previously the chairman of the Intermarket Group, a manufacturing firm, until 2021.

Streaming

Streams US Netflix, BBC iPlayer & More

Streaming Rating: 9.5/10

FastestVPN offers an array of streaming-optimized servers designed to bypass geo-restrictions on various platforms. It effectively unblocks five Netflix libraries, including the US Netflix, as well as popular streaming services such as HBO Max, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and DAZN Canada. This makes it particularly strong for streaming in the US, Canada, UK, and India. However, its server for Italy does not function as expected.

FastestVPN offers a range of streaming-optimized servers across several countries, including the US, Canada, India, Italy, Japan, and the UK. These servers can be conveniently accessed through the streaming server tab.

fastestvpn-macos-streaming-server-tab

FastestVPN does not specify the streaming services its servers are optimized to unblock. However, our testing revealed that, with the exception of the Italy server, all other servers provide access to the respective country’s Netflix library, including reliable access to Netflix Japan, and more.

With FastestVPN, you can also sign up for HBO Max from outside the US and stream content on Hulu.

Overall, FastestVPN is highly effective for streaming. While the Italy server is currently non-functional and the addition of a Germany server would be beneficial, the remaining servers successfully unblock a wide range of popular streaming services globally.

Unblocks UK Streaming Services

UK streaming sites are readily accessible with FastestVPN. It successfully unblocks Channel 4, BBC iPlayer, and ITV Player. Additionally, it allows streaming from the Disney+ Star hub, which is not available in the US.

Torrenting

P2P-Friendly but Slow Torrent Speeds

Torrenting Rating: 5.5/10

FastestVPN supports P2P torrenting across its server network and adheres to a secure logging policy. However, our testing revealed notably slow torrenting speeds, averaging just 0.7 MiB/s. The combination of sluggish speeds, an imperfect kill switch, and DNS leaks makes FastestVPN a less favorable option for file sharing. Additionally, it lacks port forwarding and SOCKS5 support.

Ranked #34 out of 62 VPNs for Torrenting

Below is an overview of FastestVPN’s performance in our torrenting tests:

Torrenting Attribute Result
Average Download Bitrate 0.3MiB/s
No. of P2P Servers 550
Logging Policy No Logs
Kill Switch Yes
Port Forwarding No

An ideal torrenting VPN should deliver speeds approaching 10.0 MiB/s, facilitating rapid and efficient P2P file sharing.

Furthermore, a reliable torrenting VPN typically provides features such as port forwarding and SOCKS5, which are preferred by experienced users. FastestVPN, however, does not offer these essential tools.

qBittorrent-Test-1

We have significant security concerns regarding FastestVPN’s kill switch and potential leaks. Our tests indicate that the kill switch does not consistently block your real IP address, posing a risk of exposing your true location during internet disconnections.

Additionally, we observed DNS and IPv6 request leaks while using FastestVPN on Windows, which is a serious issue. As such, it is advisable to avoid using FastestVPN for torrenting on Windows devices.

It is unfortunate, given that FastestVPN permits torrenting across its entire server network and maintains a sufficiently private logging policy.

Speed

Fast Local & International Speeds

Speed Rating: 8.9/10

Despite its name, FastestVPN does not live up to the highest speed expectations but offers commendable performance across its server network. It provides particularly strong speeds for local connections, and its international speeds are also satisfactory. However, long-distance connections to the US are less reliable, experiencing significant download speed reduction, low upload speeds, and elevated ping times.

Distance 0mi 5mi 300mi 2,500mi 3,500mi 4,000mi 4,800mi 6,700mi 9,900mi

FastestVPN provides sufficient speed for most internet activities but falls short of competing with the fastest VPNs available.

We observed a notable decrease in speeds as the distance between our location and the FastestVPN server increased. For instance, while an average download speed of 96 Mbps on a Canadian server is impressive, the speed drops to 80 Mbps when connecting to the UK.

Although FastestVPN’s download speeds generally meet our standards for a fast VPN, its upload speeds are notably disappointing. The VPN consistently delivered poor upload speeds globally, except on servers closest to our location.

While this may not significantly impact everyday use, it could be a concern for online gamers, frequent video callers, or regular torrent users.

Server Locations

Servers in 48 Countries

Server Locations Rating: 8.1/10

FastestVPN’s website claims coverage in over 40 countries, but our count within the app shows 48. Although this is not an extensive network, the service includes 550 individual servers. The network is predominantly Western-centric, with no servers in Africa and only one each in South America and the Middle East. Additionally, city-level server options are limited. Nevertheless, FastestVPN covers major countries effectively and has a reliable server infrastructure.

Ranked #20 out of 62 VPNs for Server Locations

  • 550+ IP Addresses
Coverage Across Continents:
Continent Countries with Servers
Europe 29
Asia 10
North America 3
South America 3
Africa 2
Oceania 1

FastestVPN offers connections in only 48 countries, a relatively limited range compared to many competitors, such as ExpressVPN, which provides access to 106 countries.

Additionally, FastestVPN has only 550 individual servers, a modest number compared to competitors with thousands of servers. This limited server count increases the risk of server overload, which can lead to reduced speeds and frequent CAPTCHAs while browsing. As FastestVPN’s popularity grows, these issues are likely to become more pronounced.

The majority of FastestVPN’s server locations are concentrated in Western regions, which may result in suboptimal connection speeds for users in other parts of the world. The US is the best-served country, offering 13 city-level server options across 13 states.

Physical Server Network

FastestVPN utilizes physical, bare-metal servers, meaning that their servers are physically located in the geographical regions they list. This contrasts with virtual servers, which only provide IP addresses from the listed country without being physically situated there.

The relatively small number of servers at FastestVPN can be attributed to the higher costs associated with establishing and maintaining physical servers. However, these physical servers offer enhanced security and stability compared to their virtual counterparts.

An exception to this is FastestVPN’s servers in India, which are virtual. This approach allows them to comply with India’s new VPN data laws, which mandate the storage of user data. We view this as a positive measure for user privacy.

FastestVPN did not disclose whether it owns or rents its servers, describing this information as “confidential.” Given this lack of transparency, it is reasonable to assume that many of their servers may be rented, as many VPN providers typically highlight ownership of their infrastructure.

Security & Technical Features

Secure on macOS, but Leaks on Windows

Security & Technical Features Rating: 6.5/10

FastestVPN effectively addresses the fundamental aspects of VPN security and is leak-free on macOS. However, on Windows, FastestVPN suffers from data leaks, including DNS request leaks. On the positive side, it supports robust protocols such as WireGuard and OpenVPN with ChaCha20 and AES-256 encryption. The kill switch feature, though, requires enhancement.

FastestVPN provides a secure environment with essential internet security features, including an ad blocker and double VPN servers. However, it lacks the advanced functionalities found in VPNs such as NordVPN or Windscribe, including RAM-only servers or GPS spoofing.

Split tunneling is supported on all devices except macOS. FastestVPN offers several protocols across its applications, including WireGuard, OpenVPN (TCP & UDP), and IKEv2. We recommend using OpenVPN or WireGuard for their superior security and speed.

Does FastestVPN Encrypt Your Traffic?

Our initial test aimed to determine the effectiveness of FastestVPN’s traffic encryption. We utilized Wireshark, a packet-sniffing tool, to evaluate this.

The screenshot below demonstrates that, upon connecting to FastestVPN, our internet traffic became indecipherable, confirming successful encryption.

fastestvpn-wireshark-test

FastestVPN uses AES-256 and ChaCha20 encryption, which are considered to be the very best. We expect nothing less from a quality VPN.

FastestVPN’s Kill Switch Performance

FastestVPN’s kill switch fails to provide reliable protection on both macOS and Windows. We observed that your IP address may be exposed during VPN server changes or reconnections after unexpected disconnections, which is a significant issue.

On Windows, enabling the ‘Automatically Reconnect’ option in addition to the kill switch improves its functionality slightly, but it remains insufficiently secure.

EXPERT ADVICE: The kill switch is automatic on macOS but must be manually activated on other devices. Additionally, the kill switch is not supported with the IKEv2 protocol on Android.

Leaks, Virus & Malware Checks

We conducted comprehensive tests on FastestVPN to identify potential leaks, malware, and intrusive trackers, and the results were disappointing.

  • Leaks: On macOS, FastestVPN effectively prevents IP, DNS, WebRTC, and Geolocation data leaks. However, on Windows, DNS requests do leak, compromising privacy as your ISP may still see your browsing activity. Due to this, we recommend avoiding FastestVPN on Windows.
  • IPv6 Support: FastestVPN does not support IPv6 connections. On macOS, it blocks IPv6 traffic to prevent potential data leaks.

fastestvpn-ipv6-connections

IPv6 Support

While blocking IPv6 connections is a prudent measure, the optimal approach would be to offer full support for new IPv6 connections.

The situation is markedly different on the Windows app. It does not automatically block IPv6 connections, and our leak test tool confirmed that FastestVPN does leak IPv6 data on Windows, representing a significant security vulnerability.

Ad & Tracker Blocking Performance

FastestVPN advertises an ad and tracker blocker that is automatically enabled across all its apps.

We evaluated the ad blocker using an ad block test, and the results were underwhelming. It successfully blocked only 56% of ads and trackers, which is considerably below the standard set by leading VPNs, which typically block over 90% of such content.

Additionally, our tests using a tool from the EFF revealed that FastestVPN’s tracker blocker is not effective, failing to adequately prevent tracker activity.

fastestvpn-tracker-blocker-test

FastestVPN: Areas for Improvement

FastestVPN has several key areas where it needs to enhance its security offerings. Addressing DNS leaks, integrating IPv6 and WireGuard support, and implementing a robust, system-wide kill switch that doesn’t leak are critical. Moreover, to compete with more advanced VPNs, FastestVPN must consider adding features such as multi-hop servers, diskless servers, rotating IP addresses, and more. Currently, FastestVPN has significant room for improvement.

Bypassing Web Censorship

Limited Success in Accessing Blocked Websites in China

Censorship Bypassing Rating: 4.0/10

FastestVPN lacks obfuscation technology, and our testing confirms that it is ineffective in bypassing censorship in China. While it may function in countries with less stringent restrictions, such as Russia, there are more reliable alternatives available.

Ranking: #38 out of 62 VPNs for Bypassing Web Censorship

Our testing on a Shanghai server revealed that FastestVPN cannot access websites blocked by the Great Firewall. Unfortunately, we were unable to log in to FastestVPN while connected in China, as all of its apps were blocked.

However, when using another VPN that works reliably in China, we were able to log in and access blocked sites like Instagram and Facebook through FastestVPN. This reliance on an additional VPN diminishes FastestVPN’s utility for users facing censorship.

FastestVPN may perform slightly better in countries with less aggressive censorship, such as Turkey. However, its Western-centric server network limits its effectiveness in regions where internet access is frequently restricted and censored. Therefore, we cannot recommend FastestVPN for users seeking to bypass web censorship in heavily regulated regions.

Device & OS Compatibility

Available on Popular Platforms

Device Compatibility:

FastestVPN offers custom apps for popular desktop and mobile platforms, including Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. Although it claims to support Fire TV and Android TV, these apps require manual installation, which can be cumbersome. Additionally, we encountered difficulties when attempting to install FastestVPN on a router, even after carefully following the provided instructions. This limitation restricts its usability on Smart TVs, gaming consoles, Apple TV, Roku, and similar devices.

Apps

FastestVPN is compatible with the following major platforms:

  • Windows
  • macOS
  • iOS
  • Android
  • Linux
  • Router

While FastestVPN can be used on Linux devices, it requires manual configuration, which may be challenging for beginners. In contrast, the best Linux VPNs typically offer dedicated graphical user interface (GUI) apps, making them more user-friendly.

fastestvpn-devices-and-platforms-list

Router Installation Challenges

Router Installation Issues:

When attempting to install FastestVPN on our LINKSYS WRT 32100 ACN test router, we encountered significant difficulties, and ultimately, the VPN connection could not be established. Due to this installation failure, we were unable to use FastestVPN on devices without dedicated apps, such as gaming consoles, Smart TVs, Apple TV, and Roku. This limitation significantly reduces FastestVPN’s overall device compatibility.

Simultaneous VPN Connections

FastestVPN allows up to 10 simultaneous VPN connections across multiple devices. This generous allowance is particularly advantageous since FastestVPN does not log the number of devices associated with your account, enabling you to protect all your devices without restrictions.

Browser Extensions

FastestVPN offers browser extensions that are available for installation on:

  • Chrome
  • Firefox

Ease of Use

Outdated Apps but Simple to Navigate

Ease of Use Rating: 6.0/10

FastestVPN is user-friendly, but its outdated apps and persistent bugs detract from the overall experience. Issues such as failed connection attempts and slow loading times can make using the service frustrating. Additionally, offering more language options could significantly enhance accessibility.

Ranked #45 out of 62 VPNs for Ease of Use

The interface and design of FastestVPN’s apps are currently behind the curve compared to more modern and user-friendly VPNs on the market. During our evaluation, we encountered technical issues that unnecessarily complicated the user experience. For instance, some servers failed to connect, and loading times were occasionally unacceptably long.

Despite these drawbacks, FastestVPN remains straightforward due to its lack of additional features. The app’s simplicity—featuring a home screen with a connect button, a server list, and a settings cog—makes it easy to navigate, even for beginners.

FastestVPN on Desktop: macOS & Windows

On macOS, FastestVPN offers minimal features, allowing users only to change their server and protocol. The kill switch is automatically enabled, with no other notable features available.

fastestvpn-windows-vs-mac

Simplistic, But Not Always for the Best

While FastestVPN’s simplicity makes it easy to use, this minimalism may not be ideal. A well-designed VPN can offer advanced features while remaining user-friendly. For instance, Surfshark achieves a good balance between usability and technical sophistication.

The Windows app offers slightly more advanced features, including split tunneling and convenience options like Auto-Connect After Launch and Launch at Startup. However, the setup process for FastestVPN on Windows is less intuitive, requiring manual installation of the TAP adapter. Additionally, the app is prone to frequent crashes, which further hampers the user experience.

FastestVPN on Mobile: iOS & Android

FastestVPN’s iOS app is straightforward and minimalistic. It features a main home screen with a central connect button, a server list, and a basic settings page where you can change your protocol or enable Smart Tunneling. This simplicity may appeal to users seeking an uncomplicated experience.

fastestvpn-android-vs-ios

Smart Tunneling: A Useful Feature with Limitations

On FastestVPN’s iOS app, Smart Tunneling is the equivalent of split tunneling, allowing you to route specific internet traffic outside the VPN tunnel. This feature can be particularly useful for users who need selective protection.

Similarly, the Android version of FastestVPN is straightforward and includes split tunneling. However, setting up the kill switch requires manual configuration through the Android device settings, adding a layer of complexity.

Overall, both FastestVPN mobile apps prioritize simplicity in their design.

Fire TV App: Limited Protocol Support and Availability Issues

FastestVPN claims to offer a custom, user-friendly VPN app for Firestick. However, it only supports UDP and TCP protocols, limiting its flexibility. Moreover, despite these claims, the app is conspicuously absent from the Fire TV app store, making it difficult for users to access and utilize.

fastestvpn-firestick-app-search

Manual Setup for Fire TV Stick: Time-Consuming and Limited

FastestVPN does not offer a dedicated app for Fire TV Stick; instead, it provides a manual setup guide. While we were able to follow these instructions successfully, the process is time-consuming. During our testing, we found that the VPN connect button does not function when using the IKEv2 protocol. To get the Fire TV Stick app to work, users must select either the UDP or TCP protocol by navigating to Settings > Select Protocol.

Browser Extensions: Promises Unmet

FastestVPN’s browser extensions claim to provide streaming servers for platforms like Netflix, Hotstar, PureFlix, and Prime Video US. They also offer features like WebRTC blocking and an ad blocker. However, in practice, the streaming servers failed to unblock the listed sites, falling short of their advertised functionality.

fastestvpn-chrome-browser-extension-home-screen

Browser Extensions: Limited Functionality and Performance

The ad blockers in FastestVPN’s browser extensions underperformed in our tests, blocking only 22% of ads and trackers—significantly less effective than their desktop counterparts. Additionally, these browser extensions are quite limited in comparison to the free options available from Windscribe, CyberGhost, and TunnelBear.

For FastestVPN subscribers, these extensions can provide a quick and private web browsing experience. However, it’s important to note that browser extensions are not full VPNs and do not encrypt all your internet traffic. FastestVPN’s browser add-ons function as HTTPS proxies, encrypting only browser traffic while leaving other traffic, such as torrenting clients and email, unprotected. As such, they should not be considered a replacement for the full VPN desktop app, which offers comprehensive protection across all applications.

Customer Support

Reliable and Personable

Customer Support Rating: 9.0/10

FastestVPN offers live chat support staffed by real people, not bots. We appreciated the human touch, with responses that were quick, polite, and helpful. However, contrary to its claims, this support is not available 24/7. Additionally, while the website offers a variety of tutorials to assist with setup, the resources are not as extensive or technically detailed as we would prefer.

FastestVPN Customer Support: Efficient but Occasionally Inconsistent

FastestVPN provides live chat support through its contact page, where users are promptly connected with a human support agent. Our interactions with the support team have generally been positive, with quick and polite responses.

However, there have been instances where the responses did not directly address our queries. For example, when we asked about the total number of servers FastestVPN offers, the agent only mentioned that the servers in Russia were under maintenance, which was unrelated to our question.

The website’s resources can be helpful for those navigating complex manual setups, but they lack significant technical depth. The FAQ section, in particular, is quite basic and limited in scope.

For more complex inquiries, it’s advisable to contact FastestVPN via their support email: support@fastestvpn.com. While response times are reasonably quick—our email received a reply in just over 90 minutes—this is slower compared to competitors like Mullvad, which responded in just 13 minutes.

Overall, FastestVPN’s support is capable of handling both simple and more complex questions, though there is room for improvement in terms of accuracy and resource depth.

Price & Value

Exceptional Affordability with a Lifetime Offer

Price & Value Rating: 9.9/10

FastestVPN stands out as one of the most cost-effective VPN services available. With its three-year plan priced at just $1.11 per month, it already offers incredible value. However, the real highlight is its lifetime subscription, available for a one-time payment of $40.00. While FastestVPN may not be flawless, it’s hard to resist such an attractive price.

Ranked #1 out of 62 VPNs for Price & Value

FastestVPN offers four pricing plans:

  • Monthly: $10.00/month (Billed $10.00 every month)
  • 12 Months: $2.49/month (Billed $29.95 annually)
  • 3 Years: $1.11/month (Billed $39.95 every three years, saving 75%)
  • Lifetime: $40.00 (Billed once, saving 95%)

The real savings come with the longer-term plans. The annual plan reduces the cost by 75% to $2.49 per month, billed annually. However, the three-year plan is even more affordable, costing just $1.11 per month—billed as $39.95 every three years.

The standout offer is FastestVPN’s lifetime subscription for just $40.00, a one-time payment. We tested this plan and can confirm its legitimacy. Given the minimal financial commitment, this lifetime deal offers remarkable value, even if you end up outlasting the service itself. The longer, more expensive plans are unnecessary, making FastestVPN the best choice for a lifetime VPN.

Additionally, you can add more multi-logins for $6.00 each, though each plan already includes 10, which is sufficient for most users.

Payment & Refund Options: Flexible Payments but a Limited Refund Period

FastestVPN accepts a variety of payment methods, including:

  • American Express
  • Bitcoin
  • Bitcoin Cash
  • Mastercard
  • PayPal
  • UnionPay
  • Visa

In addition to the usual credit and debit card options, FastestVPN supports PayPal and several cryptocurrencies. Cryptocurrency is the most privacy-friendly option, offering an extra layer of anonymity. For those seeking even more privacy, services like Mullvad accept cash payments.

However, FastestVPN does not offer a free trial, and its money-back guarantee is limited to 15 days—significantly shorter than the industry standard of 30 days, and well below the 60 days offered by services like Norton Secure VPN. If you request a refund within the 15-day period, it may take up to 15 additional days to receive your money back.
